Age 5 thru First Grade:
Music lessons are 30 minutes, once a week. Age-appropriate music education software is incorporated into the lesson.
Grade 2 thru adult:
Lessons are one hour (individual instruction for 30 minutes followed by 30 minutes of computer lab using guitar or rhythm software. Steel string acoustic, electric or classical guitar is taught. Finger-style lessons are possible after pick-style is learned. For classical guitar, only finger-style is taught and the guitar should be a classical type with nylon strings and a straight fingerboard. Knowledge of note reading and previous guitar experience is helpful.
General Comments:
Children can start as young as age five if they have an appropriate guitar. The bones of the hand are not knitted together until around the age of nine. Thus, a young beginner should use a "folk guitar" that has nylon strings and is smaller than a standard size.
Private Lessons:
Note reading, rhythm and theory are taught in addition to ear training and song playing so that the student learns to be an independent musician.
Group Classes:
The second full week of each month is designated as Group Week. Once a month, private students meet for an hour long Group lesson instead of their private lesson. Groups are organized according to level and age. Students play together and take turns playing lead and rhythm guitar and/or bass. At least two students are required for group class.
Recitals:
Generally there are opportunities once or twice a year for students to play in a recital. Students are also encouraged to play in a church or school band when ready.
