Music Instruction
Philosophy
A couple of general objectives that we try to reach with our students are:
- To develop a student's musical potential
- To strive for musical independence
Teaching Methods
We accomplish this by incorporating rhythm reading, ear training, composition, note reading by patterns, technique and all facets of music theory including chords and transposing. As students advance, they learn how to stylize music, play from a 'lead sheet', improvise, and play by ear. They learn how to present music in various aspects and via several learning media (such as computer and MIDI) and how to use technology to enhance development of rhythm, ear training, composing, arranging, and theory.
We use once monthly Group Sessions for private students to give them practical application in the real world (ensemble playing, practical theory and ear training) via group participation and music games.
Piano students also learn how to record and sequence songs they have learned. These are stored on their personal disk and are used to analyze their own performance, to play with a rhythmic accompaniment for developing good rhythm, listening skills, and the ability to play in an ensemble or accompany a soloist. Periodically, their repertoire is transferred to a CD which is theirs to keep.
After their private lesson, students use our extensive interactive music education computer lab. Computers talk to a music keyboard via a MIDI interface. This provides enjoyable method of enforcing note reading, ear training, rhythm reading, and theory and music history learning.
Instrument Instruction
Music lessons are available for several music instruments: Piano, violin, guitar, electric bass, organ, early beginner (piano, violin, guitar). We also teach music theory.
