Music Instruction:   Music Theory

General Comments:

Why learn music theory? Music theory knowledge is invaluable when playing, reading or listening to music. When you have an understanding of the construction of music, then…

- You are a much better sight reader
- You will find it easier to memorize music
- You are able to play by ear
- You learn new music much faster
- You can improvise
- You can stylize music arrangements
- You can transpose music
- You can harmonize from a lead sheet
- You can modulate
- You can compose music

This is why theory is taught in private lessons.

Theory lessons include:

Theory of chord construction
Rhythm reading
Interval and pattern note reading
Chord progressions
Harmonizing a lead sheet
Stylizing printed music
Playing by ear
Improvising
Transposing and modulating
Analyzing music for sight reading and learning new music

Private or Class Lessons:

Theory is best taught classroom style, but private lessons can be arranged. At least two persons approximately the same age and level are needed.
