Music Instruction: Violin
General Comments:
We
use a combination of methods that include ear training and development
(Suzuki method). Ear training is used more at the beginning with violin
than with other instruments because a non-fretted string instrument relies
exclusively on the ear in order to play pitches correctly. There is no
fret or note to push.
Note reading is also taught at the beginning but separately rather than
simultaneously with playing. Then, as the student advances, they are brought
together.
Instrument Rental:
Instruments are not available for rent from us. They may be rented through
one of several businesses in the Indianapolis area such as Casa del Sol
Violin Shop, Paige's Music, IRC Music and Musician's Repair Service.
Private
Lessons:
Weekly private music lessons are held for 30 minutes. Second-grade or older
students can work an additional 30 minutes independently on music programs
in the music computer lab.
If possible, students are grouped with others of approximately the same
age and level during Group Week (2nd full week of each month) and meet
as a class. Activities are performed to reinforce note and rhythm reading,
ear training, music history, musical instruments, and playing in ensemble.
Group (Class) Lessons:
Classes can be held if there are sufficient number of students near the
same age and level who can come at the same time.
Orchestra / Ensemble:
Students who can read music and stay together may join with keyboard and
guitar students once a month to play band, orchestra or ensemble.music.
Other Inclusions:
At the appropriate time, such as when notes can be drawn on the staff,
composing is introduced.
